6 HotDocs Problems You Can Solve Without Calling Tech Support: Part 2 Document Services
Yesterday we posted the first 3 common HotDocs problems you can solve without calling tech support, and now it’s time to share 3 more:
Problem 1:
When you try to launch HotDocs, the HotDocs splash screen appears, but HotDocs fails to launch.
Solution:
You may be able to resolve this problem by deleting the HotDocs registry key for the current user:
- Close HotDocs.
- Open Registry Editor (Click the Windows “Start” button and type “regedit” in the Search/Run box).
For HotDocs 10:
- Drill Down to the folder named HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > HotDocs
- Delete the HotDocs key (right click the subfolder called HotDocs and delete)
For HotDocs 2009 or earlier:
- Drill Down to the folder named HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > LexisNexis
- Delete the HotDocs 6 key (right click the subfolder called HotDocs6 and delete)
- Restart HotDocs – all registry keys are recreated automatically.
If this still doesn’t fix the problem, try the steps listed in Part II of this post on the HotDocs Wiki.
Warning: Deleting the key will remove some non-critical user-specific HotDocs settings (e.g., the user’s default location for HotDocs libraries). These preference settings will need to be re-set after this solution is implemented.
Changes made to the Windows registry can cause some programs to malfunction, so be careful when editing the registry.
Problem 2 :
HotDocs displays a “Macro HD6EditTemplate.wcm not found” error and you are unable to edit templates.
Solution:
The “Macro HD6EditTemplate.wcm not found” error occasionally occurs after an upgrade with HotDocs or WordPerfect. This can also occur when HotDocs is run prior to the first use of WordPerfect.
- Open up WordPerfect. Go to Tools > Settings > Files > Merge/Macro tab.
- Copy the file path under “Default Macro Folder” (C:Users…) and then open HotDocs. (You may want to copy the file path into Notepad or WordPad)
- With HotDocs open, go to Tools > Options > Word Processors. Click on “Word Processors.” On the right side of the screen, you will see a dropdown bar that reads “Default word processor.” Verify the correct version of WordPerfect is displayed.
- Expand the (+) next to “Word Processors” on the left side of the screen and click on the folder with your version of WordPerfect.
- Under “Macro Folder,” paste the WordPerfect file path from step 1.
- Click OK at the bottom of the HotDocs screen. Close HotDocs and WordPerfect.
- Open up HotDocs again. Assemble a WordPerfect template before editing the document to see if you get the error message again. If the document assembles properly, then the problem should be resolved. Some users have reported that WordPerfect locked up on the first attempt, but after closing WordPerfect and restarting it, the macro settings worked accordingly.
Note: If you are still getting the error, try rebooting your computer. It is possible that the macros are not located in the WordPerfect file path you copied into the Macro Folder file path box (see steps 2-5 above). If you have old versions of the macros on your computer used with older versions of WordPerfect and HotDocs, you may have to delete the older macros in order to no longer see the error message, even after you have re-pointed to the newest macro folder.
Problem 3:
When attempting to edit a template, HotDocs displays the following error message: “HotDocs cannot play the macro HD6EditTemplate.Main because the macro does not exist in the original template or in a template currently loaded into Word”.
Solution:
This error is encountered when the HotDocs macro templates are missing from the Word Startup folder. You will need to copy the HotDocs macros to the Word Startup folder:
- Close HotDocs and Word.
- Open Windows Explorer (right-click on the Windows “Start” button and choose “Explore” or “Open Windows Explorer”).
- Browse to C:Program FilesHotDocsSourceWord or C:Program Files (x86)HotDocsSourceWord (depending on your operating system).
- Open the Macros folder (Word 2003 and earlier) or the Macros2007 folder (Word 2007 and later).
- Copy the two files contained in that folder (“hd6edit.dot” and “hd6icon.dot” for Word 2003 and earlier or “hd2007edit.dotm” and “HotDocsRibbon.dotm” for Word 2007 and later).
- Browse to your Word Startup folder.
- Paste the files in your Word Startup folder.
- Restart HotDocs.
We hope these tips have been helpful to you. What other quick fixes have you found when working with HotDocs?
